Frequently asked questions about air conditioning

What size air conditioner do I need?
It depends on room volume, ceiling height, glazing, insulation and which way the room faces — not just floor area. An undersized unit runs flat out and costs more to run; an oversized one short-cycles and never dehumidifies properly. We measure the space and size it properly, then explain why.

Should I get cooling-only or reverse cycle?
Reverse cycle costs a little more up front but heats as well as cools, and in Melbourne that is usually the better buy — running a reverse-cycle system is generally cheaper than electric or gas heating. We quote both and let you decide.

Can I supply my own unit?
Yes. We are a Panasonic authorised supplier, but we are happy to install a unit you have bought. Just note that the manufacturer warranty on the unit is then between you and the retailer — our lifetime labour warranty still applies to the installation.

How long does a split system installation take?
A straightforward back-to-back single head is usually a half-day. Longer pipe runs, multi-head systems, upstairs installs or jobs needing a new circuit from the switchboard take a full day. We tell you which yours is when we quote.

Do you need to run a new circuit?
Often, yes. Most split systems need their own dedicated circuit and RCD protection. Because we are electricians, that work is included in our quote rather than being a surprise extra from another contractor.

Are you licensed to handle refrigerant?
Yes — we hold ARC authorisation, which is a legal requirement in Australia for anyone handling refrigerant gas. Anyone installing a split system without it is breaking the law and voiding your warranty.

What maintenance does a split system need?
Clean the indoor filters every few months yourself, and have the system professionally checked every one to two years. We offer preventative maintenance visits that catch failing capacitors and low gas before you notice a hot December.
