Underground Power & Trenching

Underground power done by the people who also dig the trench

Running power to a detached structure is the classic two-contractor job. A trenching contractor opens the ground, then an electrician comes back to lay cable and connect it — and the two never quite line up, so the trench sits open across your yard for a fortnight.

We do both. The same crew brings the machine, digs to the required depth, lays correctly sized conduit with a draw wire and marker tape, pulls the sub-main, backfills and compacts, and then terminates and certifies the circuit at both ends. One quote, one booking, one warranty.

Sizing matters more than people expect. A long underground run has real voltage drop, so the cable has to be sized for the distance and the load rather than for what would be fine inside the house. We also size the conduit for future capacity, because pulling a second cable later is trivial if the conduit is there and expensive if it is not.

Common jobs: power and lighting to a shed or workshop, supply to a granny flat with its own sub-board, EV chargers at a detached garage, pool and spa circuits, garden and yard lighting, and commercial car park lighting and bollards. FAQs

Frequently asked questions about underground power & trenching

How deep does underground power cable need to be buried?

AS/NZS 3000 sets minimum cover depths that vary with cable type, mechanical protection and what is above — a garden run and a run under a driveway are different. Typically it is around 500mm for a domestic garden run and deeper under vehicle access. We confirm your exact requirement in the quote.

Do I need conduit, or can the cable go straight in the ground?

Some cable types can be direct buried, but we almost always use conduit. It protects the cable, it lets you replace or add a cable later without digging up the yard again, and it makes the installation far more future-proof for a very small extra cost.

What size cable do I need for my shed?

It depends on the load and the distance. Long runs suffer voltage drop, so a cable that would be fine over ten metres can be inadequate over sixty. Tell us what you want to run out there and how far it is, and we will size it properly.

Does the shed need its own switchboard?

If it has more than a couple of circuits, yes — a small sub-board with its own RCD and breakers is the correct approach and makes fault-finding far easier. We include it in the quote where it is warranted.

Do you handle Dial Before You Dig?

Always, before any machine goes in the ground. We lodge the enquiry, review the plans and hand-dig to expose located services. It is free and it is what stops contractors hitting gas and water mains.

Will you reinstate the lawn or driveway?

We backfill and compact as standard. Turf, concrete or paving reinstatement can be added to the quote, or we can leave it ready for your landscaper — whichever you prefer.

Can you go under a driveway without digging it up?

Often, yes. Short crossings can frequently be bored underneath rather than cut and reinstated, which is cheaper and far less disruptive. We will tell you at the quote whether your driveway suits it.

Do I need a permit?

Usually not for work wholly within your own property. Work in a nature strip, footpath or road reserve needs council or authority approval, which we identify and arrange as part of the job.
