EV Charger Installation

EV charging installed properly, not just plugged in

The granny charger that came with the car works, but it is slow and it was never intended as a permanent solution. A dedicated wall box charges several times faster, protects the circuit properly, and stops you running an extension lead across a wet driveway.

The install is more involved than mounting a box on a wall. We assess your existing supply and switchboard capacity, confirm whether single-phase is enough or three-phase is worth pursuing, size the cable for the run to the garage or carport, add the required RCD protection, and commission the unit with the app or load-management system.

If the charger sits away from the house — a detached garage, a carport across the yard — the supply has to go underground. Our own crew does the trenching and conduit, so it is one quote and one crew rather than coordinating a trenching contractor separately.

For workplaces and fleets we install multiple units with load management so the site's supply is not overwhelmed when every vehicle plugs in at 5pm. See commercial electrician.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about ev charger installation

How much does EV charger installation cost in Melbourne?

The charger itself is the predictable part; the installation varies with cable run length, whether the board has capacity and whether the run needs trenching. We inspect, then quote a fixed all-in price so you can compare properly.

Do I need three-phase power for an EV charger?

Not usually. A single-phase 7kW charger adds roughly 40km of range per hour, which covers overnight charging for almost everyone. Three-phase charging is faster but only worth pursuing if you already have three-phase supply or drive very high distances.

Will my switchboard need upgrading?

Sometimes. A charger is a substantial continuous load and needs its own circuit with the correct RCD type. If your board is full or still has ceramic fuses, a switchboard upgrade is part of the job — we tell you at the quote, not on the day.

How long does the installation take?

A straightforward install near the switchboard is typically half a day. Longer runs, upstairs boards, or a detached garage requiring trenching take a full day or more. Board upgrades add time, which we schedule with you.

Can you install a charger at a detached garage?

Yes. That needs a sub-main run underground in conduit at the correct depth. We do the trenching ourselves, so it stays one quote — see underground power and trenching.

Can I supply my own charger?

Yes, we are happy to install a unit you have bought. The manufacturer warranty then sits between you and the retailer; our lifetime labour warranty still covers the installation itself.

Do I need approval from my electricity distributor?

Larger chargers can require notification or approval depending on your supply. We handle that process as part of the job rather than leaving you to work out the paperwork.

Can you install chargers for a workplace or apartment block?

Yes. Multi-unit installations need load management so the site's supply is not exceeded, plus a metering arrangement so usage is billed to the right party. We scope both as part of the quote.
