Exit & Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting compliance, maintained properly to AS 2293

Exit and emergency lighting is the system nobody thinks about until an inspector asks for the logbook or the power fails during trade. It is also one of the most commonly non-compliant systems in Melbourne commercial buildings, usually because testing lapsed years ago and the batteries quietly died.

AS/NZS 2293 requires a discharge test at six-monthly intervals, where fittings are run on battery for the full rated duration to prove they actually last the distance. A monthly flick of the test switch does not satisfy that. Results have to be recorded in a logbook kept on site.

We install new systems, repair and replace failed fittings, run the six-monthly discharge testing, and maintain the logbook so it is complete and current. Where fittings are ageing we will usually recommend upgrading to LED at the same time — the fittings are cheaper to run, the batteries last longer, and while a lift is already on site the labour is far cheaper. See LED lighting upgrades.

This sits naturally alongside test and tag and RCD testing within a single planned maintenance schedule, so all your compliance falls due at the same visit.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about exit & emergency lighting

How often does emergency lighting need testing?

AS/NZS 2293 requires a discharge test every six months, where fittings run on battery for their full rated duration. Results must be recorded in a logbook kept on the premises.

What is a discharge test?

The mains supply to the emergency fittings is isolated and they run purely on battery for the full rated duration — usually 90 minutes. Anything that fades early has failed and needs its battery or fitting replaced. It is the only test that proves real-world performance.

Who is responsible for emergency lighting compliance?

Generally the building owner or occupier, depending on the lease. Either way it is not optional, and an incomplete logbook is the first thing an inspector or insurer will look for after an incident.

What happens if fittings fail the test?

We record the failure, quote the repair or replacement, and rectify it — usually on the same visit if it is a battery or a common fitting type. Failures are noted in the logbook along with the remedy.

Do I need a logbook on site?

Yes. The standard requires records to be kept on the premises so they can be produced on request. We maintain it for you as part of the testing visit.

Can you take over testing from another contractor?

Yes, and it is common. We audit what is installed, verify the existing records, identify anything that has lapsed or failed, and put you back on a compliant six-monthly cycle.

Should I upgrade old fittings to LED?

If your fittings are ageing, usually yes. LED emergency fittings draw less power, are kinder to their batteries and fail less often. The saving is mostly in labour — doing it while access equipment is already on site is far cheaper than a separate visit.

Do you test emergency lighting in residential buildings?

Yes — apartment buildings and multi-storey residential common areas have the same obligations. We work with body corporates and building managers across Melbourne.
