Test & Tag and RCD Testing

Electrical safety compliance without the last-minute scramble

Test and tag exists because damaged leads and faulty appliances are still one of the most common causes of workplace electric shock. Under Victorian OHS duties, employers must maintain plant and equipment in a safe condition, and a documented testing regime is how you demonstrate you have.

We test and tag portable appliances, leads, extension cords, RCDs and portable RCDs. Each item gets a durable tag showing the test date, the next due date and the tester, and everything goes into a register with asset numbers so you can prove what was tested and when.

RCD testing is separate and often overlooked. Safety switches are mechanical devices and they do fail — a push-button test only proves the button works, not that the device trips within the required time. We measure actual trip times with a calibrated instrument and record the results.

For larger sites we add thermal imaging of switchboards, which finds loose or overloaded connections running hot long before they fail. Many insurers now expect an annual scan. It all folds neatly into a planned maintenance schedule so nothing lapses.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about test & tag and rcd testing

How often does test and tag need to be done?

It depends on the environment. Offices and low-risk workplaces are commonly annual; construction, demolition and harsh environments are every three months. We will recommend an interval based on AS/NZS 3760 and your actual conditions rather than selling you visits you do not need.

Is test and tag legally required in Victoria?

There is no single law that says 'tag everything annually', but employers have a duty under Victorian OHS legislation to keep plant and equipment safe. A documented testing regime is the practical way to demonstrate that duty is being met, and most insurers and principal contractors require it.

What does the tag actually show?

The test date, the next test due date, the status and who tested it. We use durable tags that survive the environment they are in, and we back it with a register so a missing tag does not mean a missing record.

Why isn't pressing the test button on my RCD enough?

The button only proves the mechanism moves. It does not measure whether the device actually trips within the maximum allowed time. RCDs degrade mechanically, and a slow trip is the difference between a shock and an electrocution. We measure it properly.

How often should RCDs be tested?

Push-button testing is commonly done every six to twelve months depending on the environment, with instrument trip-time testing at longer intervals — typically annually for most workplaces. We set the schedule and remind you when it is due.

What happens if something fails?

It is tagged out of service immediately so nobody keeps using it, and we quote the repair or replacement. Small items are often cheaper to replace; we will tell you which is which rather than automatically billing a repair.

Do you provide a report we can show an auditor?

Yes. A dated, itemised register listing every asset, its result, the test date and the next due date. Multi-site customers get it consolidated by location.

Can you do this outside business hours?

Yes. Testing is disruptive during trade, so retail and hospitality customers usually book us early morning, evening or weekend. We price those hours into the quote rather than adding a loading later.
