Split System Installation

What a proper split system installation actually involves

Two installers can quote the same unit and deliver very different results. The difference is in the parts you cannot see: whether the pipework was pressure tested and evacuated properly, whether the wall penetration was sealed, whether the condensate actually drains away, and whether the electrical circuit was done by someone licensed to do it.

We size the system to the room first — volume, ceiling height, glazing, insulation and orientation, not just floor area. Then we agree where the indoor head and outdoor condenser go, taking into account airflow, noise, neighbours and future servicing access. Then you get a fixed price covering the whole job, including the electrical work.

On the day: brackets fixed to structure rather than plasterboard, pipework run neatly and pressure tested, the system evacuated properly before charging, penetrations sealed, condensate piped to a legal discharge point, and the dedicated circuit and RCD installed at the switchboard. Then we run it up, check operating pressures and temperatures, and show you the controller and app.

We are a Panasonic authorised supplier and an ARC-authorised refrigerant handler. For the broader picture on systems, brands and running costs, see air conditioning.

Multi-head systems

One outdoor unit serving several rooms — fewer condensers, tidier result.

Old unit removed and disposed of responsibly, new one in the same day.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about split system installation

How long does a split system installation take?

A straightforward back-to-back single head is usually a half-day. Longer pipe runs, upstairs installs, multi-head systems or jobs needing a new circuit from the switchboard take a full day. We tell you which yours is at the quote.

Where should the outdoor unit go?

Somewhere with clear airflow, out of direct afternoon sun if possible, away from bedroom windows and neighbours' living areas, and accessible for future servicing. We will walk the options with you rather than defaulting to whatever is closest.

Do you remove and dispose of my old unit?

Yes. The refrigerant is recovered legally — venting it is both illegal and environmentally damaging — and the old unit is removed and recycled. That is included in a replacement quote.

What is a multi-head system and is it worth it?

One outdoor condenser serving several indoor heads. It means fewer boxes on the wall and a tidier result, which matters on smaller blocks and where body corporate rules apply. The trade-off is that all the heads share one compressor, so we size it carefully.

Will you need to run a new circuit?

Usually. Most split systems require their own dedicated circuit with RCD protection. Because we are licensed electricians, that work is quoted and completed by the same crew instead of being a surprise from a second contractor.

Can I install a split system myself?

No. Handling refrigerant requires ARC authorisation and the electrical connection requires a licensed electrician. A DIY install voids the manufacturer warranty and is illegal on both counts.

What warranty do I get?

The unit carries its manufacturer warranty, which we register for you. Our installation labour carries our lifetime warranty — if the workmanship fails, we come back and fix it free.

How soon can you install?

Outside peak summer, usually within the week. From late spring the lead time stretches as everyone books at once, so if you know you need one, getting the quote done early is worth it.
