Residential Electrician

A home electrician who quotes properly and cleans up afterwards

Most people's experience of a home electrician is an hourly rate, a vague estimate and a bill that arrives larger than expected. We do it the other way around: we look at the job, tell you the fixed price, and that is what you pay whether it takes us two hours or five.

Typical home jobs include adding power points and USB outlets, replacing downlights with LEDs, installing ceiling fans and outdoor lighting, hardwired smoke alarm replacement, fixing dead circuits and, very often, a switchboard upgrade because the old board has ceramic fuses and no safety switches.

If you are renovating, get us in early. Deciding where power, data and lighting go before the plaster is on saves money and avoids compromises later. We work alongside builders and are used to coordinating around other trades.

Buying or selling? A pre-purchase electrical safety inspection tells you what you are inheriting, and a compliant board with working safety switches and smoke alarms is one less thing to negotiate at settlement.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about residential electrician

How much does an electrician cost in Melbourne?

It varies enormously by job, which is exactly why we quote a fixed price per job instead of an hourly rate. You will know the number before we start, and it does not move unless you ask for extra work.

Do you charge a call-out fee?

Quotes and advice are free. For repair work we quote the job before we begin, so there is no separate call-out fee bolted onto the invoice afterwards.

Can you add power points to an existing wall?

Usually yes, with minimal damage. Access through the roof space or under the floor covers most single-storey homes. If the wall is solid brick or the run is awkward we will explain the options and what each costs before choosing one.

Do I legally need safety switches?

New and significantly altered circuits must be RCD protected, and any home without safety switches is well behind current standards. Given they cost very little to add during a switchboard upgrade, there is no good reason to go without.

Are my smoke alarms compliant?

Victorian homes need working smoke alarms, and in homes built or significantly renovated since 1997 they must be hardwired. Alarms also expire — check the date printed on the unit; ten years is the usual life.

Can you replace halogen downlights with LEDs?

Yes, and it is one of the better-value jobs going. LEDs use a fraction of the power, run far cooler, and remove the insulation clearance problem that old halogens create in the ceiling.

Do you work with builders on renovations?

Regularly. We handle rough-in before plaster and fit-off at the end, and we are used to working to a builder's programme alongside other trades.

Will you clean up afterwards?

Drop sheets go down, dust is vacuumed and offcuts leave with us. We treat your home the way we would want ours treated — it is written into our code of ethics.
