Switchboard Upgrades

Why a switchboard upgrade is usually overdue

The switchboard is the safety system for the whole property, and most Melbourne homes built before the 1990s still have the original one. Rewireable ceramic fuses do not protect people — they protect cable. Safety switches, which cut the power in milliseconds when current leaks to earth, are what protect people.

An upgrade replaces fuses with circuit breakers, adds RCD protection across circuits, tidies and labels the board, and gives you capacity for what modern homes actually run: induction cooktops, air conditioning, EV chargers and solar. It is also the point at which many properties finally get surge protection.

We inspect the existing board and supply, tell you honestly whether a full upgrade or a smaller intervention is the right call, and quote a fixed price. Most domestic upgrades are a one-day job with a planned power interruption we schedule with you.

If your board is already faulty — buzzing, hot to touch, scorched or repeatedly tripping — treat it as urgent and call our emergency electricians rather than waiting for a quote.

Signs your switchboard needs upgrading

Ceramic rewireable fuses

If you rewire a fuse with fuse wire, your board predates modern safety standards entirely.

No safety switches

RCDs protect people from electrocution. A board without them protects only the cable.

Frequent tripping

Constant nuisance tripping usually means the board is undersized for the load.

Renovating or extending

New circuits need capacity and RCD protection — do the board while walls are open.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about switchboard upgrades

How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Melbourne?

It depends on the size of the board, how many circuits there are, the condition of the existing wiring and whether the meter panel and supply also need work. We inspect first and give you a fixed itemised price, so you are comparing a real number rather than a range.

How long does the upgrade take?

Most domestic upgrades are a single day, with the power off for part of it. We agree the outage window with you beforehand so you can plan around fridges, freezers and anyone working from home.

Will my power be off all day?

No. We do as much preparation as possible with power on, then take the supply down for the changeover itself. On a typical home that is a few hours rather than the whole day.

Do I legally have to upgrade my switchboard?

There is no blanket requirement to upgrade an existing compliant installation. But any new or significantly altered circuit must have RCD protection, so most renovations, air conditioning installs and EV charger installs trigger board work anyway.

What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a safety switch?

A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuit. A safety switch (RCD) protects people, by detecting current leaking to earth and cutting supply in milliseconds. You need both — they do different jobs.

Should I add surge protection?

It is inexpensive at the time of an upgrade and it protects everything downstream — appliances, computers, solar inverters and air conditioning boards. Given Melbourne's summer storms, we recommend it on most upgrades.

Do you handle the paperwork with the distributor?

Yes. Where the meter panel, service fuse or supply needs work we coordinate with your distributor and lodge the required notifications, and we issue your Certificate of Electrical Safety at completion.

Will the new board fit in the same spot?

Usually. Modern boards are more compact per circuit, though adding a lot of circuits or RCDs can mean a larger enclosure. We confirm this at the inspection so there are no surprises on the day.
